Vaxholm, called the archipelago's "capital", is the gateway to Roslagen from Stockholm. The town is a hub for boats travelling to the central and northern archipelago – Roslagen's archipelago.

Vaxholm's municipality includes about 70 islands. Situated on Vaxön, the town of Vaxholm is best explored on foot. You'll find charming little shops offering personal service, several restaurants and cafés, and small, picturesque galleries. And wherever you are, you're never far from the water. You can even take a swim right in the middle of town if you like.

Don't miss the town's galleries and pleasant little shops, which offer a wealt of items. Also visit the Hembygdsgården homestead museum and summer café. Enjoy a city walk and learn more about Vaxholm's colourful history.

Vaxholm Fortress Museum

Take a boat ride over to Vaxholm's citadel on the tiny island of Vaxholmen and discover the Vaxholm Fortress Museum. Here you can learn about the fort's history, which dates back to the 16th century. It was King Gustav Vasa who decided to build a fortress here to guard the approach to Stockholm.

The Vaxholm Fortress Museum also has an exhibition about Ytterby mine, where eight new elements were discovered! Variousactivities are also held here, including an homage to the TV game show "Fort Boyard" – fun for young and old alike. There's also a restaurant and a café.
